Pre and post-operative physiotherapy
Pre and post-operative physiotherapy care plays a crucial role in the recovery process and aims to optimize outcomes, reduce complications and promote faster healing. Here’s a breakdown of what each stage typically involves:
ERA Physiotherapy are accredited CAREWAY providers.

Pre Operative Physiotherapy Care:
1. Assessment and Education:
– An assessment of the patient’s current physical condition, movement patterns, and strength.
– The patient is educated about the surgery, recovery process, assistive devices and what to expect post-surgery.
2. Improving Mobility and Strength:
– Exercises are prescribed to improve the patient’s flexibility, strength, and mobility. This helps to prepare the body for surgery and can reduce the time needed for recovery.
3. Pain Management:
– Techniques such as soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization may be used to address any pre-existing pain or stiffness.

Post Operative Physiotherapy Care:
1. Pain and Swelling Management:
– Immediately following surgery, the aim is to manage pain and swelling through modalities like compression, elevation, and gentle movement.
2. Early Rehabilitation:
– Physiotherapists work with patients to restore range of motion (ROM) and begin light strengthening exercises as soon as it’s safe to do so.
– Hands-on therapy techniques, like massage or myofascial release, may be used to address scar tissue or soft tissue tightness that can develop post-surgery.
3. Progressive Strengthening and Functional Training:
– As healing progresses, more intense exercises are gradually introduced to improve strength, flexibility and endurance.
– Functional tasks are incorporated to ensure the patient can return to daily activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, or lifting objects.
4. Education on Long-Term Care:
– Patients are taught exercises and stretches to continue at home to maintain improvements and prevent future injuries.
